WHAT is Cross Country
Cross country running is a sport in which teams and individuals run a race on open-air courses over natural terrain. The course, typically 4–12 kilometres (2.5–7.5 mi) long, may include surfaces of grass, and earth, pass through woodlands and open country, and include hills, flat ground and sometimes gravel road. It is both an individual and a team sport; runners are judged on individual times and teams by a points-scoring method. Both men and women of all ages compete in cross country, which usually takes place during autumn and winter, and can include weather conditions of rain, sleet, snow or hail, and a wide range of temperatures.
How is cross country scored?
Scoring
The lowest scoring team in a cross country meet is the winner. Only the top five runners from a team are used in the team scoring process at conference meets. A team must have a minimum of five runners start and complete the course to achieve an official score.
Points are scored according to the following process.
If the top 5 (or 4) runners from Team A finished with places 1,3,5,7,9 they would achieve a score of 25 for their team. Conversely team B could possibly have 2,4,6,8,10 with a resulting score of 30. The final score would be team A - 25 and team B -30. Team A wins by a margin of five points.

Personal Records (P.R.)
Cross county is as much an individual sport as it is a team sport. Throughout the season we encourage the runners to attempt to gain personal records on each course. Although a runner may not be gaining team points during an event, he/she should be proud of any personal records that have been accomplished. Because all courses vary in level of difficulty due to the terrain, a runner should not be discouraged if a personal record is not earned at each meet of the season.
